GUIDE FOR LIS PROFESSIONALS COPING WITH JOB LOSS ENCOURAGES READERS TO “RECOVER, REFRAME, AND RENEW” Wednesday, Mar 23 2011

March 30, 2011 (New York, NY) — Stuck in a climate still recovering from the worst recession since World War II, library and information science professionals continue to face jeopardized job security and unanticipated layoffs. Coping with the professional and psychological implications of job loss can be devastating, but with Recovery, Reframing and Renewal: Surviving an Information Science Career Crisis in a Time of Change, to be released by Neal-Schuman Publishers on April 30, 2011, readers will receive valuable advice on recovering and gaining the skills necessary for restarting their careers.

Oliver Cutshaw, currently Head Librarian for the Chicago School of Professional Psychology campuses of Southern California, uses his personal experiences with recovering from a career crisis as a basis for the practical guidance he offers in this book. Following the mantra, “You can not only survive but thrive in these times of change,” he describes his journey, citing his failures along with his successes, so readers can learn from these lessons. He then suggests different ways career crises come about, before taking readers through the first step of grieving a job loss. Next, Cutshaw looks at the stages necessary for rebuilding a career. He discusses re-envisioning a career, taking a fresh look at oneself and his or her skills to focus the job hunt, before explaining how to reframe skills to prepare for the job search, covering essentials like the résumé, the cover letter, references, and applications. He then describes psychological preparation necessary for the difficult road ahead. Cutshaw also looks at what to do after receiving a job offer, considering logistics like pay, location, and environment, as well as what professional organizations and graduate schools can do to create a better professional support system. In his conclusion, he explains the basis for his advice and offers some final support to his readers.

Any LIS professional re-evaluating his or her career or facing a career crisis will benefit from the helpful guidance from someone who has gone through the same experience in Recovery, Reframing and Renewal: Surviving an Information Science Career Crisis in a Time of Change. People in other fields may also benefit from the general career advice in the book as well.

March 10, 2011 (New York, NY) — E-books have emerged as one of the most revolutionary and widely used publishing platforms, yet there is little published material on the subject. On April 30, 2011, Neal-Schuman will release E-Books in Libraries: A Practical Guide, a landmark title that will answer all of librarians’ questions on practices, trends, and other information surrounding the e-book phenomenon.

Editors Kate Price and Virginia Havergal have assembled contributions from experts in a wide range of fields, including information technology, academia, publishing, digital resources, and information services. Contributing authors begin with a history of e-books, before describing how e-books come to be and are sold and produced. Next, contributors look at managing e-texts in public libraries, further education, and higher education. They then delve into the practicalities of delivering e-books to readers, encompassing a range of issues like cataloguing, technical issues, training, and support. They also explore reader engagement. Finally, contributors examine the future of e-books, looking into how they will become more universally used, and what the e-book landscape might look like. The editors and authors include plenty of Web links and references for further information.

Librarians developing an e-book collection from scratch or maintaining an existing one will find all the tools they need in E-Books in Libraries: A Practical Guide, one of the first books of its kind.
