September 22, 2009 (New York, NY) – There are myriad ways to understand the widespread use of the internet. Influential figures from Bill Gates to Al Gore have predicted its potential to drastically transform economic systems and political life, and studies from UCLA and other academic institutions have cited its contribution in areas like social and psychological well-being. The Internet, Power, and Society: Rethinking the Power of the Internet to Change Lives, to be released in North America by Neal-Schuman Publishers on November 5, 2009, presents a critical new perspective that illuminates the crucial and inextricable link between technology and society.
Author Marcus Leaning divides the book into two parts and begins with a description of the internet’s core characteristics and how it is generally understood. He explores conventional debates that surround the relationship between technology and society, and examines the internet’s deeply-rooted role in politics, media, and global communication.
The second part extends these ideas and develops a more general approach to the study of the internet as a form of society. Here, Leaning examines the internet and its ability to transform and accelerate politics and communication as a function of its societal environment. The book concludes with a discussion of new investigative methods, using technology to aid development, and the challenges that new technologies present to more traditional media.
The Internet, Power, and Society: Rethinking the Power of the Internet to Change Lives presents an exciting approach to the study of the internet, and proposes that its ability to facilitate change is profoundly linked to modern social life.
