NEW BOOK AND CD-ROM PROVIDE STEP-BY-STEP GUIDANCE FOR DEVELOPING AND IMPLEMENTING A SUCCESSFUL TECHNOLOGY PLAN Tuesday, Oct 20 2009

The Complete Library Technology Planner

Careful, informed, and systematic planning is the most crucial element in successfully   implementing technology at the library. The Complete Library Technology Planner: A Guidebook with Sample Technology Plans and RFPs on CD-ROM, to be published by Neal-Schuman on December 15, 2009, is designed to provide administrators and staff in any type of library with the critical guidelines to follow when planning for a technology-based system or service.

Following a foreword from Executive Director of the American Library Association Keith Michael Fiels, authors John M. Cohn and Ann L. Kelsey provide a comprehensive introduction to the key concepts and elements in technology planning and the changing technological landscape affecting today’s libraries. They divide their book into twelve chapters, beginning with an introduction to different ILS systems and technologies. Cohn and Kelsey then address the library technology plan’s primary purpose and scope, with guidance for meeting funding requirements and a discussion of the prominent “E-Rate” program. Next, the authors explain how to collect data and develop a library profile in preparation for implementing technology, assess and identify institutional needs and priorities, and write, update, and price a technology plan. They also include a model five-step process to help demonstrate key planning stages. Cohn and Kelsey then shift their focus to applying a completed technology plan, with guidelines for preparing collections, efficient implementation, managing staffing and training issues, and evaluating and amending the plan.

The accompanying CD-ROM includes over thirty-five time-saving, sample technology plans and RFPs. Each plan is specifically targeted to public, academic, school, or special libraries, and can be easily replicated or adapted for use in any library organization. An array of figures, checklists, and examples are included throughout the book to help reinforce important concepts, and a comprehensive webliography lists further related resources.

The Complete Library Technology Planner: A Guidebook with Sample Technology Plans and RFPs on CD-ROM is a hands-on, practical book that gives librarians the tools they need to organize a successful technology effort.

NEW RESOURCE SHOWS LIBRARIANS HOW TO BUILD A GRAPHIC NOVEL COLLECTION THAT WILL BRING ADULTS TO THE LIBRARY Tuesday, Oct 20 2009

Graphic novels are not just for kids; in fact, the average graphic novel reader is 29 years old, and adults of all ages comprise a substantial portion of overall readership, according to The Public Librarians’ Guide to Graphic Novels. The Librarian’s Guide to Graphic Novels for Adults, to be published by Neal-Schuman on December 18, 2009, is an in-depth guide designed to help librarians build and manage an optimal collection of graphic novels that meet adult readers’ diverse interests and specific tastes.

Library Journal declared author David Serchay’s widely acclaimed title The Librarian’s Guide to Graphic Novels for Children and Tweens as, “…highly and enthusiastically recommended for libraries serving children and tweens.” In this new resource, Serchay divides his text into two parts to provide librarians serving adults with an equally comprehensive, start-to-finish guide. Part I begins with a brief history and definition of graphic novels. Next, readers find a discussion of the format’s many popular genres like Action, Horror, Crime, Superhero, and more, as well as foreign formats like Manga.

Part II offers guidance for building a strong collection and purchasing titles. There is helpful information on a number of large and small graphic novel vendors and publishers, along with advice for deciding what kinds of graphic novels to purchase and where to find reliable review sources and ratings. Serchay covers collection management, including guidance for cataloging, processing, and future development, and addresses the best ways to display and promote the collection. He also explores graphic novels’ important ties to academia, and discusses their growing use in university and higher education settings.

The Librarian’s Guide to Graphic Novels for Adults concludes with three comprehensive appendices. The first contains an annotated list of over 600 graphic novels Serchay recommends across all genres, authors, and publishers. The second lists a large number of graphic novel–related books, including other books on graphic novels in libraries, nonfiction works, and scholarly resources. The third provides a list of online sources including publisher Web sites, sites for news and information, and various online mailing lists.

Graphic novels are now a crucial part of library collections, and The Librarian’s Guide to Graphic Novels for Adults is an important resource to help librarians build a thriving repertoire.
